General Surgery

General surgery is a medical specialty that primarily focuses on the surgical treatment of organs and tissues within the body. General surgeons diagnose various diseases and provide treatment through surgical interventions. These specialists typically deal with organs located in the abdominal cavity, but they can also work in many other areas such as skin, soft tissues, breasts, thyroid, and anorectal regions.

General surgeons treat diseases by performing various surgical procedures. These include surgical treatments for conditions such as appendicitis, gallbladder problems, intestinal obstructions, stomach and intestinal ulcers, hernias, breast cancer, thyroid diseases, soft tissue infections, colon and rectal cancer, among others. Additionally, general surgeons play a role in the treatment of injuries resulting from trauma or accidents.

General surgery employs not only traditional open surgical techniques but also more modern and minimally invasive techniques such as laparoscopic surgery and robotic surgery. Laparoscopic surgery is a method performed through small incisions using a camera and thin surgical instruments. Robotic surgery, on the other hand, relies on robotic arms to enable precise movements by the surgeon.

A general surgeon evaluates the patient’s medical history, conducts physical examinations, utilizes laboratory and imaging tests for diagnosis, and subsequently determines appropriate treatment options. In cases requiring surgical intervention, they plan and perform the surgical procedure. Additionally, it is within the responsibilities of a general surgeon to monitor patients after surgery and manage the recovery process.

General surgery often requires a multidisciplinary approach and collaboration with other medical specialists. For instance, they may work together with oncologists, radiologists, gastroenterologists, and other experts in the treatment of cancer or the management of complex diseases.
